Portrait of a Woman c.1605-10
Oil on panel | 58.5 x 44.1 cm (support, canvas/panel/stretcher external) | RCIN 402736
-
Head and shoulders portrait of an unidentifed woman. She is facing slightly to the left, wearing a white dress with green ribbon bows and a standing lace collar, pearl drop earrings and necklace with her hair set high and embellished with jewels including drop pearls, rubies and diamonds in simple square settings. This portrait was formerly thought to represent Anne of Denmark (1574-1619), but the identification does not appear convincing. The sitter has also previously been identified as Anne Vavasour (c.1560 - c.1650), a member of Queen Elizabeth I's household.
Provenance
First recorded in the Private Closet at Kensington Palace in 1818 (no 649), as a portrait of Anne of Denmark
