Venus Disrobing 1652-3?
Oil on canvas | 99.1 x 80.1 x 1.8 cm (support, canvas/panel/stretcher external) | RCIN 402672
-
Venus, three-quarter-length, seated facing left, her head turned to the spectator, removing her chemise; her hair plaited over the back. This is a simplified copy of a painting after Titian in the Royal Collection (RCIN 402636). Considerably weaker than the primary version, there are variations in the hair and drapery-edges, and a curtain at the right has been omitted.
Provenance
Possibly the copy made c. 1652-3 by Mrs Boardman (Richard Symonds, B. L., MS. Egerton 1636, fol. 198 v.); first recorded in the Closet at Kensington Palace in 1818 (no 627)
