Fortune (?) c.1600-99
Oil on canvas | 118.0 x 100.8 cm (support, canvas/panel/stretcher external) | RCIN 402634
-
A three-quarter-length winged figure is gazing upwards, her half-naked body turned slightly to the right. She rests her head on her left hand and appears to be holding the handle of a rudder in her right. The picture is much obscured under discoloured varnish, making it difficult to draw conclusions about its authorship and subject. The female figure has been identified as a personification of Truth, but it seems more likely that she represents Fortune. Close to the style of Reni, the picture may possibly be by Cantarini.
Provenance
This is probably the 'Guido, Cupid, Canvas 3ft 11in x 3ft 4in, Fine but much injured' recorded in the Passage at Kensington Palace in 1818 (no 595)
