The Virgin, seated, right of centre, with Joseph standing, but if asleep, behind her. The Christ Child leans forward towards a tray of gifts proffered by an aged, kneeling King wearing an ermine collar. Two other kings are to the left. In the background is a boy with a flag on a horse; two doves can be seen on the stable roof in the upper right, and an ox-head against the right edge. This is a very characteristic work by Schiavone, one of a group of small-scale 'Adorations' which seems to have inspired Jacopo Bassano in his 'Adorations'. The Madonna and the doves follow prototypes by Titian.

Acquired by Charles II in 1660 for £40 from William Frizell at Breda (List II no 23); recorded in the Store at Whitehall in 1666 (no 539)
