A view of the Lochnagar range of mountains. In the foreground a sandy coloured track winds its way through a heather landscape towards trees on the lower slopes of the range, which is seen in the distance; grey clouds in the sky. This painting was given to Queen Victoria by Princess Louise on the Queen’s birthday. It is inscribed on the back with the name of the artist, the subject and the date, 24 May 1869. In the notice of the picture in Acquisitions, Windsor, it is stated to be by Princess Louise, but this has since been corrected and the picture attributed to the Duke of Argyll.
