Victoria, Princess of Leiningen married Edward, Duke of Kent in 1818 and her daughter Victoria, the future Queen Victoria, was born in 1819. This painting and another classical landscape by the same artist (RCIN 404026) may not be original compositions but copies of works by a professional artist such as Philip Hackert. Inscribed on the back: Victoir[e] Fürstin zu Leiningen / 1816.

Given to Queen Victoria by the King of the Belgians, the artist’s brother, in 1836; recorded in Visitors' Waiting Room (Room no 244) at Windsor Castle in 1878
