A set of 153 medium-sized soft-paste porcelain plates, each with a gilt rim, with a dark blue border with gilt decoration and three rectangular reserves painted with birds in landscapes, separated by three ovals painted with insects; a bird in a landscape vignette in the centre.
Provenance
Part of a soft-paste Tournai porcelain combined dinner and dessert service ordered by Louis Philippe, Duc d'Orleans (1747-93) in 1787, painted with birds from Buffon's 'Histoire Naturelle des Oiseaux'; about half of which acquired by George IV from Robert Fogg in two lots in 1803 and 1806.
