On 10 July 1947 the engagement between Princess Elizabeth and Lt Philip Mountbatten was made public. In February that year, Prince Philip had renounced his Greek royal title and become a naturalised British citizen with the surname Mountbatten. The day before the wedding Lieutenant Mountbatten was created HRH The Duke of Edinburgh.Provenance
