Photograph of King George VI (1895-1952) with a yellow Labrador Retriever on the Sandringham estate. The King is standing facing the camera holding a walking stick in his left hand. He is wearing a tweed suit and cap. The dog is sitting at his feet to the right and there is a thick hedge behind
King George VI was known for his interest in the yellow Labrador Retriever, both as a gun dog and as a pet. The dogs were bred at Sandringham and registered at the Kennel Club with the 'Sandringham' prefix. The yellow Labrador was relatively uncommon in the early 20th century; the first recorded appearance of this colour coat was not until 1899. -
