Portrait of Captain Horatio Ross (1801–86), taken at the time of the inaugural meeting of the National Rifle Association, Wimbledon. The photograph shows Captain Horatio Ross kneeling and aiming a rifle in three-quarters right position. He rests his left elbow on his left knee and wears a tweed suit with cap.
Captain Horatio Ross was one of the leading sportsmen of the Victorian age, winning many awards for his shooting abilities. He was also an early and talented advocate of photography, helping to establish the Photographic Society of Scotland in 1856. Fenton, who photographed Ross several times, served in the Volunteer Rifle Corps alongside Ross.
