Photograph of one of the Arcade buildings built around the borders of the Royal Horticulutural Gardens, South Kensington. The building is formed of loggias with a stone balustrade on the roof. Steps lead up to the Arcade from the garden.
The Prince Consort was instrumental in the design of the Italianate Arcades, even to the point of choosing the make and colour of the bricks used in their construction. As well as providing a sheltered border walk around the gardens, terracotta statues were intended to be placed under the loggias.Provenance
