Photograph of the parents of John Brown, personal servant to Queen Victoria. On the left stands John Brown senior (1791-1875) standing in left side profile. Mr Brown is described as a farmer in the 1841 census. On the right and seated is John Brown's wife, Margaret, nee Leys (1799-1876) who wears a white bonnet. The woman standing between Mr and Mrs Brown is possibly their daughter, Anne Brown (1829-1867). The portrait was taken at Bush of Crathienaird where he had a farm.
Mr and Mrs Brown had 11 children in total who were, in order of birth: James (b. 1826); John (1826-1883), who became Queen Victoria's personal servant; Francis (1836-49); Ann (1829-67); Charles (1831-49); Donald (b. 1832); Margaret (1833-49); William (1835-1906); Francis (1828-31); Archibald (b. 1842) and Hugh, who died at Balmoral (1839-96).Provenance
