Princess Victoria Mary of Teck (called May by her family) was the great-granddaughter of King George III through her mother, born Princess Mary Adelaide of Cambridge. In 1891, she was briefly engaged to the Prince of Wales’s eldest son Albert Victor, Duke of Clarence who died of influenza in January 1892. On 3 May 1893, Princess May became engaged to his younger brother George, Duke of York, with whom she is shown here. They were married on 6 July 1893. In 1910 the bridegroom succeeded to the throne as King George V, and the bride became Queen Mary. -
