Photograph of a watercolour of a hall or colonnade, open to the exterior to right. Two doors in far wall, one is open. An African man stand in the middle of hall, potted plants and sculpture to right. The watercolour is unlikely to be by Prince Alfred but it may record a place he visited or stayed during his tour. Picture is cropped at corners.
In July to September 1860 Prince Alfred paid an official visit to South Africa while serving as a midshipman on board HMS Euryalus. His tour took him through the Cape Colony, Eastern Cape, Natal and the Orange Free State. The Prince, who had learnt the rudiments of photography before the visit, took with him some photographic equipment including a stereoscopic box camera.Provenance
