Portrait of Muhammad Sa'id Pasha (13.3.1822-18.1.1863), Wali [Viceroy] of Egypt, from 1854. The Viceroy met the Prince of Wales in Egypt in 1862, at the beginning of the Prince's 'Eastern Tour'. He introduced various modernisations to the country, including new railway lines, and was responsible for the construction of the Suez Canal. It was officially opened in November 1869, and the northern port was named Port Said after the Pasha.
