  • Photograph of a full length portrait of Charles Landseer standing, facing three-quarters to the right. He looks to the front. Landseer poses with a cane in his right hand. He rests his left hand on a hat, positioned on the table beside him.

Charles Landseer was the son of the engraver John Landseer and elder of the artist Edwin Landseer (many of his paintings are in the Royal Collection). He was heavily involved with the Royal Academy since 1837 and was Keeper from 1851-1873, which was a teaching post. Most of his pictures were of subjects from British history, or from literature. He liked to take care over the historical accuracy of the accessories and details in his paintings. There are a few watercolours and a copy of a self-portrait of his brother Edwin Landseer (RCIN 402141) in the Royal Collection.
