John Phillip was a Scottish painter best known for his portrayals of Spanish life. On this basis, he was nicknamed Spanish Phillip. He started painting these studies after a trip to Spain in 1851. Some of his paintings are in the Royal Collection, for example The Letter-Writer of Seville (RCIN 401188), The Dying Contrabandista (RCIN 404562), and the Marriage of Princess Victoria to Prince Frederick William of Prussia (RCIN 406819). The Royal Collection also has photographs of his studio, decorated in the Spanish style (RCINs 2923145, 2923146, 2923147).Provenance
