Photograph of a historical painting by Edward Corbould which depicts Act 3 Scene 1 of King John by William Shakespeare. Charles Kean as King John rises from his throne which sits atop a dais. On the left are Queen Constance played by Ellen Kean and Prince Arthur played by Kate Terry who stand facing the King. Alfred Wigan can be seen on the right. The characters are portrayed inside a tent.
The play was performed by Charles Kean's company at the Princess's Theatre in Oxford Street which Queen Victoria attended on four separate occasions. The play was also staged at Windsor Castle as a private performance. The original watercolour on which the photograph is based, was a gift to Queen Victoria from Prince Albert.Provenance
