Photograph of a silver casket decorated with an intricate leaf design and featuring a large central panel . The central panel depicts a classical interior with three male figures, on the left, and three female figures, towards the right. The central female figure holds a dagger in its scabbard with her left hand while keeping her right hand in a chest resting on a stool. The lid for the casket is decorated with a sculpture of a partially naked, semi-reclining female figure with her hands behind her head adjusting her necklace. The key for the casket is visible in the lower right.
The panel depicts Achilles, dressed as a woman, revealing his masculine identity via his fascination for a sword. The sword was brought by Odysseus, with a selection of other gifts for women. Odysseus watches as Achilles holds up the sword.
This casket is now held by the Victoria and Albert museum.Provenance
