Mar Saba, founded in 483 AD in the name of St Sabas, is considered to be one of the oldest monasteries in the world. The buildings are carved into the side of the cliff face, high above the Kidron River. Because of its location near Jerusalem, the monastery was attacked by numerous invading armies over the years, including the European Crusaders in the twelfth century. The photograph is signed, captioned and dated in the negative, 'F Bedford Mar Saba'. The number in the Day & Son series is 72.
