Photograph from a series showing Crimean battlefields, 1900-01. The photograph shows the field of Balaklava, which was the scene of the Charge of the Light Brigade. There is a path in the foreground with open land behind and hills in the distance. The photograph is tinted with pinks and blues. The Charge of the Light Brigade was a charge of British light cavalry during the Battle of Balaklava, 25th October 1854. The heavy loses sustained and the subsequent poem by Lord Tennyson ensured that the scene continued to be of interest to British, French and Russian photographers decades after the event.
Provenance
Presented to King George V by Charles J Cooke, 1917. Cooke originally commissioned the photographs from a local photographer while British Vice-Consul of Sevastopol with the intention of presenting them to Queen Victoria.
