During the Crimean War the entrance to Sevastopol harbour was defended by a number of forts. Fort Michael was located on the northern side of the harbour.

Whilst the photograph is signed 'Robertson', it has been noted that the photographer Felice Beato was sent to the Crimea in April-May 1856 by his brother-in-law James Robertson, and is responsible for this and other Crimean photographs.
