Photograph of the breach in the Redan after the fall of Sevastopol. The walls are reinforced with wicker fencing and sandbags and there is a gap in the centre. Several soldiers stand around this entrance and there are two flagpoles on the wall to the right. The interior of the redoubt is littered with cannonballs, wood, rope and other debris. There is a low wall of sandbags in the foreground. The British made two unsuccessful attacks on the Redan fortification, a Russian stronghold, during the Siege of Sevastopol. The siege eventually ended on the 8th September 1855 when the French captured the nearby Malakoff redoubt, forcing the Russians to abandon the city.
