Photograph of the Malakoff Battery. In the foreground there is a grassy hillside with a number of rocks. Sevastopol can faintly be seen in the valley behind. The French, led by Maréchal Pélissier, captured the Malakoff redoubt on the 8th September 1855. It had been one of the key Russian defences during the Siege of Sevastopol and its fall effectively ended the siege. The Russians abandoned the city that evening.
