Photograph of the trenches in front of the Malakoff redoubt. The photograph looks down from a raised vantage point and shows a series of trenches, their walls reinforced with wicker fencing and sandbags. The French, led by Maréchal Pélissier, captured the Malakoff redoubt on the 8th September 1855. It had been one of the key Russian defences during the Siege of Sevastopol and its fall effectively ended the siege. The Russians abandoned the city that evening.
