Photograph of the damaged library in Sevastopol. The building is in the Russian classical style with three storeys, ionic columns and a balustrade on the roof to the left. To the right is a polygonal tower decorated with angel reliefs. Parts of the building are badly damaged and to the far right there is a partially collapsed wall. After an eleven month siege the city of Sevastopol was captured by the allied British, French and Turkish forces on the 8th September 1855. The city was badly damaged during the siege, and many of the grandest buildings lay in ruins.
