Photograph of Cossack Bay, Balaklava. In the foreground there is a long building with a tiled roof, with cattle in a pen beside it. By the edge of the water there is a row of small tents and several piles of wood. There is a sign reading 'CATTLE PIER' on the side of a building to the left. In the harbour behind there are a number of ships, some anchored by the quayside and others further out. There are hills in the background. The British used the town of Balaklava as a base during the Crimean War. They received their supplies through the small port and transported them by rail to troops engaged in the Siege of Sevastopol.
