Photograph of Balaklava looking towards the sea, with the Commandant's house in the foreground. The Commandant's house is painted white and has a tiled roof. There are other buildings lining the harbour and the old Genoese Castle can be seen on the hillside to the left. In the harbour to the right there is a large number of ships. The town of Balaklava with its port and purpose built railway yard were of strategic significance throughout the Crimean War.
