Photograph of Corporal Pendered seated in an elaborately carved wooden chair facing right. His legs are crossed and his head is tilted slightly downwards. He is wearing military uniform with a cap. This photograph, printed by Jabez Hughes in 1883, is a carbon print pasted over the original photograph.
Corporal Pendered served with the Royal Sappers and Miners during the Crimean War and drowned off the coast of Balaklava in November 1854 when the supply ship HMS Prince was destroyed in a storm. This photograph is one of a series of portraits of Crimean War veterans collected by Queen Victoria shortly after the war.Provenance
