The Dhuloch near Balmoral 1883 after an original of c. 1859
Carbon print | 7.8 x 7.2 cm (image) | RCIN 2320229
-
Photograph of the Dhu Loch with a sharply ascending mountain side to the left, bordering the water's edge. The foreground is interspersed with boulders. On the right of the foreground, are two men, possibly Keepers. One man stands holding a telescope to his eye whilst the other is seated on the ground in left side profile, holding a walking stick.
George Washington Wilson took a number of views of the Dhu Loch that featured Keepers, possibly from the Balmoral Estate. The Dhu Loch is a reservoir serving the town of Rothesay in Argyll and Bute in Scotland. This photograph is a later carbon copy of the original albumen photograph. Carbon was a process that was less susceptible to fading, unlike an albumen print that is prone to discolouration over time.Provenance
From an album of photographs collected and arranged by Albert, Prince Consort, between 1860 and 1861
