Photograph of the Royal Observatory on Calton Hill, Edinburgh. The observatory is obscured by a tree that stands in the centre of the foreground with a low wooden fence behind it.

The Astronomical Institution of Edinburgh built the observatory on Calton Hill in Edinburgh and in 1822 King George IV named the observatory 'The Royal Observatory of King George IV'.
