Photograph of Queen Mary (1867-1953) standing talking to a wounded sailor in a wicker wheelchair. A second sailor is seated in a wooden chair on the right, slightly off-camera and a row of sailors stand in formation on the left. In the background, more sailors stand against the wall of the hospital, one wearing a dressing that covers his left ear.
The Royal Hospital Haslar was built in 1761 in Gosport, Hampshire and was the largest military hospital in England. Initially established to treat members of the Royal Navy, the hospital began treating wounded members of the Royal Air Force and Army during the 1960's. In 2001, the hospital served members of the public but was finally closed in 2009. On 9th May 1917, Queen Mary, accompanied by Princess Mary, visited Haslar Hospital to formally open a new wing of the hospital. Following the ceremony, the Queen then presented Distinguished Service Medals to those wounded in the Battle of Jutland.Provenance
