A miniature cherrywood washstand with Delft style blue and white ceramic tile splashback; two deep square drawers and central smaller drawer above shaped apron; on square tapering legs
Provenance
Martin van Straaten, who supplied the tiles, initially started business in London importing Chinese tiles. The firm later moved to importing Dutch tiles from the Delft region, working with Tichelaar in Makkum, Van Hulst in Harlingen and Ravesteijn in Utrecht. Charles Lam, the donor of this piece, was the business partner of Martin van Straaten (1886-1915), who was lost in the sinking of R.M.S. Lusitania.
