Bed 1924
Mahogany, silk, cotton | 17.9 x 15.3 x 7.6 cm (whole object) | RCIN 230052
-
Miniature mahogany tester bed with caned headboard and footboard; pale pink silk trim to scalloped tester. Cotton fitted mattress with second loose mattress. Pillow with pillow case. White silk counterpane embroidered with pink French knots and pale grey lines and a pink silk lining.
The form of this bed was inspired by a piece in Vittore Carpaccio's Dream of St Ursula (in the Galleria dell'Accademia, Venice). Lutyens designed a full-sized version of the bed for his own daughter, Ursula, and another appeared in his architectural scheme for 15 St Anne's Gate, the home of Edward Hudson, founder of Country Life magazine. Lutyens is rumoured to have supplied a dried pea to place under the doll Princess's mattress though this does not survive.Provenance
Made for Queen Mary's Dolls' House, 1924.
