Dorothy Wilding (1893-1976)
HM Queen Elizabeth (b. 1926) May 1956
Gelatin silver print | 29.2 x 23.4 cm (whole object) | RCIN 2152933
-
A head and shoulders photographic portrait of HM Queen Elizabeth II, turned three-quarters to her left, wearing the Vladimir Tiara set with emeralds, the Delhi Durbar necklace and Cullinan IV pendant and matching earrings, an evening dress with a sash across decorated with a Royal Family Order. The Delhi Durbar necklace was originally made for Queen Mary for the Delhi Durbar in 1911. Proof; unmounted.
The portrait was originally commissioned by the Bank of England, for new currency, to be designed by Robert Austin (1895-1973). There were two studies, in different dresses and jewellery. However the photographs were not approved for reproduction and therefore not used for the new banknotes. This was probably Dorothy Wilding's last sitting with the Queen, before she retired and sold her portrait business to Tom Hustler (1934-2006), a young and ambitious photographer, who first worked in her studio as an assistant.Provenance
