-
Photograph of a painting of a half-length portrait of Francis I of France (1494-1547) facing a quarter to the left. He gazes ahead, away from the viewer. He wears a hat with a feather trim and a jacket, or doublet, with a slashed, open design. Part of an inventory number can be seen in the lower left corner.
The painting was lent to the 1857 Manchester Exhibition by Queen Victoria (1819-1901), and remains in the Royal Collection, RCIN 403433. At the time of the photograph, the painting was attributed to Hans Holbein the Younger (c. 1497-1543) but is now thought to have been created by a member of the workshop of Joos van Cleve (d. 1540/41). The painting is currently on display at Hampton Court.Provenance
