At the time of the photograph, the painting was in the collection of Prince Albert (1819-61). In 1863 the painting was presented to the National Gallery, London by Queen Victoria (1819-1901), in accordance with Prince Albert's wishes. The caption accompanying the photograph attributes the work to 'Meister Christoph'. The real name of the painting's creator remains unknown, and the work is now attributed to Master of the Saint Bartholomew Altarpiece.Provenance
