Glass plate negative of a photograph of the Royal Family placed on a wooden surface. Originally taken by Roger Fenton in 1854, the photograph depicts Queen Victoria (1819-1901) and Prince Albert (1819-61) with seven of their children posed outside the conservatory at Buckingham Palace. The children are (from left to right): Princess Helena, the Prince of Wales, Prince Arthur (in front of his father), Prince Alfred, the Princess Royal, Princess Alice and Princess Louise. Prince Leopold is possibly in the pram.
The glass plate negative has been photographed showing the coated side and therefore the image appears laterally reversed. The original negative does not seem to survive in the collection, however prints from it exist in the Collection (e.g. RCINs 2906085 and 2106401).Provenance
