Rhodes enjoyed a key position in antiquity as it was located on both the east–west and north–south trade routes. As such, it was in direct contact with Egypt, Phoenicia, Cyprus, the coast of Asia Minor and other East Greek and Aegean islands, as well as mainland Greece, making it an important commercial staging post. The traded goods would include local products, imported ones and even local imitations of imported products.
