Manuscript music score. Henry Purcell (1658-95) came from a musical family, but his gifts far exceeded those of his relations. He was a member of the Choir of the Chapel Royal until his voice broke in 1673, and continued in the Chapel Royal in various musical posts until he was appointed organist at Westminster Abbey in 1679. In this role he composed his most well-known pieces, including much music for the royal court. Nahum Tate (c.1652–1715) was a poet, playwright and translator. Born in Ireland, he studied at Trinity College Dublin before moving to London. Tate was a contemporary of John Dryden, and the two collaborated on the composition and translation of many works. Tate appointed the third poet laureate after the death of Shadwell in 1692 and held the position until his death in 1715. This manuscript music score is a near contemporary copy of two odes composed by Purcell, bound in vellum. The first ode is 'Celebrate this Festival', which was written by Tate for Queen Mary's birthday in 1693 and set to music by Purcell. The second is 'The Yorkshire Feast Song', which was written in 1689 for the annual visitation by gentlemen of Yorkshire to London. This was a regular custom, and included attending a church service, followed by a feast. This manuscript was once owned by William H. Cummings, an English musician who founded the Purcell Society in 1876, and was presented to Queen Mary by Mrs Emile Mond on 28 November 1921.
Provenance
Presented to Queen Mary by Mrs Emile Mond via George Frampton, 28 November 1921.
