A pair of ivory ceremonial staffs carved to resemble lion heads with eyes of red glass. These staffs, called chobs or chotta in parts of South India, were held by court officials standing guard during Indian durbar (court), when rulers formally received visitors.
Provenance
Presented to King Edward VII, when Prince of Wales, during his tour of India in 1875-76 by Ramachandra Tondaiman, Raja of Pudukkottai.
