Contemporary mottled brown calf binding with gold-tooled spine; arms of William III and Mary II on both boards added later, probably when the book was transferred to Kensington Palace. Design identical on both sides: outer double-fillet border, with the arms of William III and Mary II (England, France, Scotland and Ireland quartered on an escutcheon of pretence billetty a lion rampant [Nassau]) surrounded by the garter and surmounted by a crown, with two unfurling ribbons to either side of crown, in the centre. Spine divided into six compartments with raised bands, gold-tooling now very worn. Each compartment tooled with double fillet border; second compartment tooled with title: ‘AMINTA FILLI DI SCIRO’; in all other compartments, a diamond-shaped centre tool formed of a central circle with radiating flower-heads and dots; tail of spine tooled with flower-head roll. Provenance
Originally from Charles II's library at Whitehall Palace (listed in Charles II's Whitehall Library catalogue, corresponding shelfmark E4); transferred to Kensington Palace by William III and Mary II some time prior to the fire of 1695 (listed in William III and Queen Mary's 1691 library catalogue). It is likely this book remained at Kensington until the library there was taken over by George III, when this book became part of the King's library at Kew Palace which formed a basis for the present Royal Library established by William IV.
