A depiction of Buddha, the ninth avatar of the Hindu god Vishnu who takes the form of an enlightened man. According to Hindu belief, he is the most recent incarnation of Vishnu who came to earth as a preacher.
Buddha is depicted crowned and enthroned under a pavilion on a riverside terrace and attended by two chauri (fly whisk) bearers. Unusually, the Buddha’s hands are unfinished.

Presented to King Edward VII when Prince of Wales during his tour of India in 1875 by Mangaldas Nathubhoy.
