A depiction of Vamana, the fifth avatar of the Hindu god Vishnu who takes the form of a dwarf. According to Hindu belief, Vamana rescued the world from King Bali, the great-great grandson of the demon Hiranyakashipu.
Vamana stands before the King Bali and his wife. To the right stands Shukra, Bali’s guru and advisor who has recognised Vamana's true identity as Vishnu. Lying on the ground before them is the sacred white Nandi Bull representing sacrifice.
This painting is from a series depicting the ten avatars of Vishnu. For further information on this series see RCIN 1005115.Provenance
