A depiction of Varaha, the third avatar of the Hindu god Vishnu who takes the form of a boar. According to Hindu belief, Varaha rescued the earth from the floodwaters after slaying the demon Hiranyaksha.
He holds the earth, depicted as a group of temples on a hill, on his tusks. Hiranyaksha’s body floats on the cosmic ocean holding a mace topped with a tiger's head.

Presented to King Edward VII when Prince of Wales during his tour of India in 1875 by Mangaldas Nathubhoy.
