Pandit Raj Narayan (active 1856-75)
Siraj al-tavarikh سراج التواریخ (Lamp of History / A History of the Rulers of Awadh) 1875
-
A unique history of the rulers of Awadh up to the British annexation in 1856 written in the author’s own hand and completed in late December 1875. Pandit Raj Narayan states that he compiled it from records in the Awadh royal archives in Lucknow and the archives of the East India Company.
For each ruler the author provides an account of the main events of his reign, some account of his personality, and details of his wives and offspring. Also included are the texts, mainly in Urdu, of many agreements and treaties between the rulers of Awadh and the East India Company. A small table at the end of each section indicates each ruler’s place and date of birth, date of death, duration of reign, place of burial, and his children; also recorded are the names of his deputy and of the British Resident of the time.
A chronogram on f.281 by Fakir Muhammad Ibrahim called Khalil gives the date of A.H. 1292 (A.D. 1875).
The text is written in good nastaliq script on thin paper dyed a variety of colours and decorated with headings and marginal decoration in gold paint. The manuscript was bound in India in a European style in a red morocco binding decorated with gold tooling and gilt endpapers.Provenance
Probably presented to King Edward VII, when Prince of Wales, on the occasion of his tour of India, 1875.
