Both these watercolours depict parts of the Balmoral estate. The cottages at Allt-na-Giubhsaich also feature in Queen Victoria’s sketches and journals. In his depiction of the cottages The Prince of Wales was interested in painting snow, writing: ‘As far as I’m concerned there is something infinitely enjoyable about painting things in the snow. The shadows take on a blueness that has a quality all of its own, and you are, in effect, painting only shadow in order to produce the desired effect
