Prints, Drawings and Photographs

©

Based at Windsor Castle, we are responsible for the preservation and restoration of works on paper and related items in the Royal Collection. The many types of object we treat include drawings, watercolours, prints, Indian and Islamic miniatures, photographs, pastels, maps, architectural drawings and fans. The team supports the curatorial staff by assessing the condition of items and making recommendations for conservation, storage, transportation and display.

Our work is extremely varied and much of it is focussed on preparing material for exhibitions at The Queen's Galleries. Recent projects have included the treatment of flaking paint in an album of Persian miniatures, the repair of architect's plans for Balmoral Castle made on brittle tracing paper, and a study of metalpoint drawings by Leonardo da Vinci.

We enjoy researching and testing materials and treatments, and recently carried out experiments to devise a new method of mounting paintings on vellum. We also help researchers investigate artists' materials and techniques through technical examination, including microscopy, ultraviolet and infrared analysis.

All the conservators in the team have professional paper-conservation qualifications. The work requires highly developed practical skills based on scientific understanding of materials and their properties, and an appreciation of the objects being treated. Patience and the ability to carry out all tasks to a very high standard are essential qualities.
