Paintings

Based at Windsor Castle, we are responsible for the preservation and restoration of all the paintings in the Royal Collection, from an Egyptian stela to a portrait by Lucian Freud. We work closely with our curatorial colleagues and every year prepare works for exhibitions at The Queen's Galleries and displays at the royal residences, along with paintings for loan to exhibitions in the UK and abroad.

Our work gives us the opportunity to travel to many of the current and former royal residences, including Osborne House and Hampton Court Palace, where we have a small studio. The scale of our work ranges from minor in-situ cleaning to full structural conservation. We are always exploring new techniques and technologies that will enable us to carry out complex treatments, such as using 3D laser modelling to create custom supports for particularly fragile paintings.

It is important to have enthusiasm, patience and perseverance in this line of work. You have to be able to see the big picture, while having a great eye for detail. It is an enormous pleasure to work on some of the finest paintings in the world. Seeing the fully conserved paintings on display and being enjoyed by the public gives us an immense sense of pride.
