The Imperial Coronation. 31 - 31 Jul 1804
Hand-colourd etching | 27.5 x 41.5 cm (sheet of paper) | RCIN 810597
-
A hand-coloured print with Napoleon falling through the scaffold on which he is crowned, the diadem proving too heavy, a deliberate act performed by the Pope along with another member of the church who scolds Napoleon. Talleyrand stands on the right offering scant support. Lines of soldiers stand before the scaffold. In the background a mocking parallel coronation takes place with apes as the protagonists. Inscribed in the plate: Pub July 31 1804 by R Ackermann No 101 Strand
